Pat Utomi Blast Apkabio For “Mocking The Poor” Amid Economic Hardship.

0

A political economist, Pat Utomi has slammed the Nigerian senate president, Godswill Akpabio, for making a mockery of the plight of suffering Nigerians.

reports that Utomi, via his Twitter handle on Thursday, berated senators for using the slogan ‘Let the poor breathe’ pioneered by President Bola Tinubu.

In the viral video online, a senator, who spoke during the plenary, said, “The speech of Mr president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that says let the poor breath, my president, distinguished colleagues, let the poor breathe that is my additional prayer”

The senate president, Godswill Akpabio responded, “Your prayer is that let the poor breath, and Senator Mustapha has seconded that the poor should breathe, those in support that the poor should breathe say hi” In response, the Nigerian senators echoed hiiii.

Reacting to the mockery by the Nigerian Senate, Utomi noted that the senators, including its president, Godswill Akpabio, abused the public trust by mocking the poor.

He further added that if Nigeria was a decent society, most of them in the senate would have resigned for mocking the poor in the way they did.

He said: “I am traumatized by this mocking of the poor by our Senate. In a decent society, we should have had resignations by now. To mock the poor is to mock God. I know where Godswill Akpabio was before Obong Victor Attah gave a hand. Better an honest poor than a rich thief politician.

“I wonder what it will take to make people realize that values shape human progress. Sustainable progress is not possible where culture is in collapse and institutions are dysfunctional. Sadly, this seems extant reality in Nigeria. Citizens need to be awakened to where we are.

“To abuse public trust and mock the victims as is becoming a habit of the criminal network of our politicians is to forget how transient power is. All will do well to remember the Judgment of Conscience, the judgment of history, and the Judgement of God. He reigns”.

Countries Must Not Burn After Elections, Winners, Losers Should Collaborate – Liberian Commerce Minister Tells ECOWAS Citizens.

0

Countries should not be allowed to burn after the general election, there should be inclusion and collaboration between winners and losers of the election, Liberia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mawine Diggs on Thursday admonished West African Citizens through members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament.

Presenting a paper titled: “Mechanism for Collaboration between political majorities and opposition as a crisis prevention mechanism” at a delocalized joint committee meeting of the ECOWAS Parliament in Monrovia, Diggs said “The majority as the winner and the minority as the loser has a duty to keep the country safe, peaceful, stable and prosperous through inclusion and collaboration.”

She noted that: “As always in a democracy, there will be a political majority elected by the people through the ballot box and a minority who does not get elected,” but said collaboration between political majorities and opposition is sure means of crisis prevention.

She added: “As we say in Liberia, after all the political processes, the country “will not burn”. So it is with all countries in the ECOWAS community. After elections, our countries must not and should not burn.”

She admitted that in a democratic system of government, the majority wins but has a responsibility to protect the minority, insisting that: “This responsibility of protection encapsulates the respect for the rights of all, irrespective of the gender, ethnic or political affiliation of the individual.

“The governing majority is required to build strong and vibrant institutions including an independent judiciary and a free press.

“The governing majority is charged to ensure that the fundamental rights, including healthcare and education, are available and affordable for all.”

On the part of the minority, Diggs said: Whilst the governing majority has a duty to govern, the minority has a charge to subscribe to the rule of law.

“The right to protest and hold government accountable or ”hold their feet to the fire”  which is fundamental, must be exercised in a peaceful manner consistent with the constitution.

“Besides criticism, the minority is required to provide alternatives on what the governing majority could do in the best interest of the citizens.”

She explained that: “The first step to govern is the creation of the space and atmosphere for governance, and this is attainable only by collaboration,” insisting that: “Both the majority and minority must collaborate at all times regardless of the disagreements and divergence of views.

“Both sides must respect democratic principles and values. Whilst the majority focuses more on the delivery of its programs, it must also create an enabling environment for everyone to co-exist. The threat of conflict is greatly minimized by a healthy collaboration between both the government, opposition, and those of no position.”

Diggs noted that: “In parliament it is often said that, “the minority has its say but the majority have the will.,” stressing that: “This assertion finds its true meaning in the responsibility the majority has to all. To demonstrate will means, to do the right thing, and create the space required for all to participate as they so wish.

“For the minority, having a say is meant to insist on holding the government accountable and serviceable while also respecting the rule of law.

“The majority and minority must collaborate and build synergies on their commonalities in areas of gender parity, a free press, an independent judiciary, and an open budget which puts the people first and above all, upholds the constitution.”

Former Liberian Justice Minister Calls on Supreme Courts to Protect Citizens’ Mandate to Mitigate Crisis.

0

Former Justice Minister of the Republic of Liberia, Cllr. Benedict Sannoh has emphasized the crucial role of upholding the citizens’ mandate by the Supreme Courts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to prevent post-election crises.

During the Delocalized meeting of the ECOWAS Parliament’s Joint Committees on Political Affairs, Peace, Security, and the African Peer Review Mechanism, Judicial Affairs and Human Rights, Social Affairs, Gender, and Women Empowerment in Monrovia, Liberia, Sannoh delivered a paper titled “Role of Judiciary in the Prevention and Management of Electoral Crisis.”

Cllr. Benedict Sannoh presenting a paper at the Delocalized meeting of the ECOWAS Parliament’s Joint Committees on Political Affairs, Peace, Security, and the African Peer Review Mechanism, Judicial Affairs and Human Rights, Social Affairs, Gender, and Women Empowerment in Monrovia, Liberia.

Sannoh highlighted that the manner in which elections are adjudicated by the Judiciary sets the foundation for either peace or crises. He stressed the importance of an independent judiciary and urged political parties to actively engage with and support the judiciary’s work.

“The judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court, must ensure the upholding of the constitutional mandate. Their role in adjudicating cases should enhance and protect the will of the people as expressed through their votes in elections, in line with the constitution. The Supreme Courts should prioritize adherence to fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution, ensuring due process is followed before any deprivation of liberty or rights,” Sannoh stated.

He also encouraged political parties to be proactive in monitoring actions taken by the elections commission, legislature, or executive branch and to seek judicial resolution when necessary, including through referendums or addressing voter roll issues.

Responding to questions from Members of Parliament, Sannoh emphasized the need for proper implementation of Member States’ constitutions, which should reflect the will and expectations of the citizens, addressing all their concerns.

During discussions, some ECOWAS Members of Parliament expressed concerns about executive influence over the judiciary. They recommended exploring changes in the constitution, such as allowing citizens to vote for judges instead of the executive appointing them. This, they believe, would enhance the independence and impartiality of the judiciary, ensuring justice is not compromised.

Hon. Ladi Ayamba, Member of Parliament from Ghana said that the decisions of some courts in West Africa have at several times been influenced by the executive, which makes justice denied in most cases.

“When Judges are appointed by the executive, they can get them to say anything in their favor. “I think this is something that we must look at changing in our various country’s constitutions. “For me, I would recommend that judges should be voted for by the people,” Ayamba said.

In conclusion, Sannoh’s paper underscored the vital role of the judiciary in ensuring fair and transparent elections, safeguarding the citizens’ mandate, and preventing potential post-election crises in West Africa.

NEPC Charges Honey Producers to Leverage EU, Emerging Markets.

0

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has empowered exporters in the value chain of honey production to leverage the European Union and emerging markets.

Speaking at a diagnostic study on honey and its by-products in Lagos, the Chief Executive Officer, NEPC, Dr. Ezra Yakusak, represented by the Director, Product Development Department, NEPC, Mrs. Obidike Evelyn, said Nigeria has the competitive and comparative advantage to thrive in the global market for honey production, stressing that the event is an integrated approach by the Council to equip exporters in the value chain of honey production.

“This is a diagnostic study on honey and honey products with a specific emphasis on exporting Nigerian honey to the European Union and other emerging markets. We have featured in today’s event, stakeholders in the value chain of bee production. We have the beekeepers, we have the processors, the packagers and marketers. So, it is all through the chain; it is an integrated approach because if you just go for the marketers and without knowing where the honey is coming from, you might get your fingers burnt,” he warned.

According to him, the most important aspect of exporting is traceability, quality, standard, packaging, handling and labelling, pointing out that information dissemination is key across the value chain.

“This is what the Council is emphasising now. The whole world is talking about quality, traceability, standard and sustainability. This is why NEPC is on top of this. We are working in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, which is the competent authority. We are just facilitating.

These beekeepers are registered with NEPC because we need to know where they are getting their products, the products they have and how it is labelled, processed and packaged.

“We are very important as a stakeholder and this is why we are providing these rudiments to help Nigeria to secure the third world country listing which is required for export of honey and honey products to the EU and other emerging markets,” he averred.

Also speaking, the Director General of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Sola Obadimu, lauded the Council’s effort to enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian products in its bid to address the high level of rejection faced by Nigerian products at the global scene.

He expressed optimism that the forum is a step in the right direction to tackling the issues involving challenges in the export market.

“NACCIMA being the umbrella body of the Organised Private Sector (OPS), we will support the council to achieve its mandate,” he assured.

On her part, a Member of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and Chairman, Export Group, LCCI, Mrs. Bosun, Solarin, said certification remains an issue for export in Nigeria, saying that importing countries will continue rejecting Nigeria’s products if they are not sure about traceability.

She urged stakeholders in the bee production value chain to adhere strictly to global best practices.

“If most agencies of government can do half of what the Council is doing for entrepreneurs, entrepreneurship development challenges would be addressed headlong.

“Until we all come together to hold our destiny in our hands rather than stand-alone. We need to collaborate to make entrepreneurship development thrive in the country,” she advised.

“According to her, “NEPC has done so much and we hope they keep doing better and also hope the federal government can keep supporting them so that they can support us.”

ECOWAS Press Statement

The nation is facing a perilous situation as a coup d’état is currently underway, sparking widespread concern and uncertainty in the region.

At the heart of the coup, President Bazoum Mohamed finds himself held hostage by the presidential guard.

The situation is tense and volatile, with the guard adamantly refusing to retreat, leading to heightened security measures being put in place.

Both the Army and National Guard have been deployed around the Presidential Palace to assert control and protect against further escalation.

Sources close to the situation report that the Presidential Guard initially sought the support of the military for their mutiny.

However, it appears that the military has chosen not to endorse the coup, refusing to be part of the attempt to overthrow the government.

This refusal from the military has created divisions within the ranks of the coup plotters, further complicating the already fragile situation.

As events continue to unfold, the international community is closely monitoring the developments in Niger.

The attempted coup poses a significant threat to peace and stability in the region, and ECOWAS’s swift condemnation underscores the gravity of the situation.

The people of Niger are anxiously awaiting further updates, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

The future political landscape of the country remains uncertain as the standoff between the coup plotters and government loyalists continues.

ECOWAS, along with other regional and international bodies, is actively engaging in diplomatic efforts to mediate and find a resolution to the crisis.

The immediate priority is to ensure the safety of President Bazoum Mohamed and prevent any further violence that could escalate the situation into full-scale instability.

The international community is united in its stance against any attempts to undermine democratic processes and the rule of law.

Calls for restraint and peaceful dialogue have been echoed from around the world, urging all parties involved to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

As the situation remains fluid, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a swift and peaceful resolution to the attempted coup in Niger.

The stability of the country and the broader West African region hinges on a peaceful and democratic outcome to this crisis.

Fuel subsidy: NLC issues seven-day nationwide strike notice

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress has put plans in place for a nationwide strike scheduled to begin August 2,2023, The PUNCH has reliably gathered.

Though a court order which barred the congress from going on strike in June still stands, our correspondent learnt that the congress noted that it could not fold its arms while Nigerians continued to suffer the effects of subsidy removal which has led to untold hardship.

The PUNCH reports that the Tinubu administration dragged the organised labour to court earlier in June to prevent a nationwide strike following the initial removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit popularly known as petrol.

Though the government set up a committee to liaise with the organised labour, officials of the Trade Union Congress and the NLC said the committee had failed to engage labour in a dialogue.

Speaking with our correspondent, the national treasurer of the NLC, Hakeem Ambali, said, “Yes. We issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to conclude all negotiations with labour or face industrial action yesterday by the Central Working Committee.”

Earlier, an NLC official who spoke to The PUNCH on Tuesday noted that the congress would meet on Tuesday and deliberate on the ways forward.

Failure of the government to meet the ultimatum would lead to a nationwide strike.
The national president of the NLC, Joe Ajaero has yet to issue an official statement on the matter nor respond to inquiries by our correspondent on the matter.

Another national official noted that the public would be intimated on other plans shortly.

NITDA Seeks Support/Collaboration From Global Tech Giants to Boost Startup Ecosystem.

0

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has commenced engagements with international bodies in ensuring that a formidable startup ecosystem is built in the country through resources that are harnessed from global tech giants for the sustenance of the country’s digital economy.

In achieving the mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration towards rejuvenating the country’s tech startup ecosystem with a million tech jobs, NITDA has been proactively socialising with global tech giants by creating platforms for startups where ideas, programs and expertise can be shared.

The Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa CCIE made this known when he received a delegation from the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) led by its Executive Vice President, Trixie Lohmirman to the corporate headquarters of the agency in Abuja.

Welcoming the visitors to Nigeria, the NITDA boss stated that collaboration is highly essential in creating a vibrant tech ecosystem globally. He further noted that big techs in the world need the talents in Africa to survive and thrive.

“When you talk about innovation and talent in the digital economy, Africa is the next frontier in terms of our youthful population. Even the big techs are coming to Nigeria and Africa to open their engineering departments because they need talents to survive”, he averred.

While applauding the visitors for organising the yearly Gulf Information Technology Exhibition in Dubai, Inuwa emphatically called on the Dubai World Trade Centre to consider the hosting of GITEX Africa in Nigeria as was done in Marrakech Morocco 2023.

“Apparently, we are moving towards having strong conferences in Nigeria and we also need your participation. You should also come to Nigeria”, he added.

Laying more emphasis, he disclosed that the country would be organising 2 conferences in the year and he thinks it is an opportunity for the visitors to leverage their existing relationship and become core partners at the event.

Asides from the annual Digital Nigeria Conference being organised by NITDA in October, the DG stated that the agency is partnering with the USA consulate general to bring all the USA companies to Nigeria for a Pan-African conference in the country which is the Global Tech Africa in November.

“The doors are still open to partner with us because we already have Business Sweden, the German government and other European countries on board for the summit. So, you can also be a sponsor”, he urged.

Conclusively, while expressing the agency’s enthusiasm in understudying how GITEX was being organised, Inuwa said that “I think we can learn from you and explore how we can build this kind of conference in Africa. If we have it in Nigeria, it is not only for Nigerians but all of Africa”.

In her earlier remark, the Executive Vice President of the DWTC thanked NITDA for their usual support towards the GITEX, Dubai. She stated that Nigeria’s support has remained one of the reasons the conference has recorded tremendous success.

“On the back of your support and the global community, GITEX is now the largest tech show in the world”, she stated.

Giving assurances of their support to Nigeria which she says has the biggest market for startups, Lohmirman sought further collaboration with the agency by providing access to funding for startups in the country.

“This is why we are here to meet up with you as a strategic stakeholder in the Nigerian digital transformation strategy and see how we can extend our collaboration together to give bigger opportunities and visibility to Nigerians to increase exportation as well as foreign direct investments”, she concluded.

While addressing a team of startups at the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, she declared that “Nigeria possess the secret army that will rule the world’s global tech ecosystem.”

Stunned by the passion of the young people she met at the centre, the Executive Vice President of the DWTC commended the effort of the Centre and pushed for a startup exchange programme between Nigeria and other countries including UAE.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the startup to interact with the highest body that manages GITEX Global with a view of taking advantage of the opportunity provided by the world’s largest tech expo.

The highly elated team from DWTC also called for more collaboration and partnership especially in the area of AI, as the centre is poised to make Nigeria the AI Centre of Africa.
