Minister Harps On Rights Of The Nigerian child, Importance Of Menstrual Hygiene

0

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dame Pauline Tallen has called for renewed commitment to ensure children are given suitable opportunities and enabling environment to realize their potentials.

The Minister stated this at a joint press conference by the federal ministry of women affairs and the federal capital territory administration held at the Ministry’s headquarters, Abuja to kick start activities to the commemoration of the 2021 national children’s day on May 27th and world menstrual day celebration on May 28th, 2021.

She said the day is set aside by the federal government to raise awareness on the plight and needs of children, promote and protect their rights as well as ensure that issues and concerns relating to the wellbeing of children are constantly brought to the front burner of national attention and actions.

According to Dame Pauline the theme of this year’s edition “Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on the Total Wellbeing of the Child: The Way Forward.” was chosen to highlight the effects of Covid-19 on the wellbeing of the child, proffer solution as well as an assured future for them.

“The theme finds significance as it highlights the effects of COVID-19 on the wellbeing of the child, while seeking to proffer lasting solutions for the betterment and development of the Nigerian Children. It has often been said that Children are the leaders of tomorrow and the main foundation/pillar on which the sustainable development of every nation can be built. This informs the urgent need to adequately invest in their wellbeing and development to achieve the kind of future we visualise for the nation” She said.

” The pandemic has truly exposed children to increased risks of different levels of violence; including physical and emotional abuse, sexual and gender-based violence, online sexual exploitation. The economic vulnerability which led to closure of schools and disrupted economic activities no doubt increased the threat of child labour, child marriage, kidnapping for ransom, abduction and child trafficking, as well as increased Gender-Based Violence across the country.” The Minister added.

The Minister assured that they will continue to echo the fact that every child and young person in Nigeria is entitled to enjoy his/her fundamental human rights, as provided for in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Dame Pauline further stated that some activities have been earmarked towards breaking the silence on Menstrual Hygiene issues, providing space for free expression of concerns and demands for supportive and protective environment for the effective and hygienic management of menstruation as well as educate the public, especially adolescent girls and women of reproductive age on appropriate means of managing their menstruation.

She said the theme for this year is “It’s time for Action” to ensure girls and women do not feel limited by their periods through increased education on Menstrual Hygiene.”

“We will also use this opportunity to highlight to the appropriate authorities, the danger the proposed National Diaper and Sanitary Pads Policy, which increases the import tariff on Diapers and Sanitary pads from 20% to 55% pose on Menstrual Hygiene Management. This Policy will no doubt affect the availability, affordability and acceptability of sanitary pads in the country”The Minister noted.

The Minister however appealed to perpetrators of kidnapping to listen to the cry of innocent Mothers and desist from the illicit act while she called on mothers to join in the crusade to bring about sanity in Nigeria’s polity.

Women’s Participation In Leadership, Gender Equality Yet To Be Achieved – Pauline

0

The Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen has called for the full representation of women in the Nigeria constitution by first and foremost recognizing the use of gender neutral and sensitive language in the constitution.

The Minister who stated this at a joint press conference ahead of the Zonal public hearing on the Proposed Alternative to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, says masculine languages are gender-biased and undermine women and girls’ political participation, which further hinders inclusive governance in Nigeria.

Recall that the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs working with a cross section of CSOs had earlier submitted a Memorandum in response to the call for submission made by the 9th National Assembly on the Review of the 1999 Constitution in September, 2020. .

However much has not been achieved to improve women’s participation and gender equality in leadership and decision-making positions despite a formal support for it through the National Gender Policy (2006) which recommends a benchmark of 35 percent in all sectors.

“To ensure equitable women representation in Government, it is important the Constitution is reviewed to provide for at least 35% women representation in appointive offices at the Federal and State levels. This will begin with an amendment of section 14 subsection (3) that prohibits predominance of persons from a few States, ethnic or sectional groups in the composition of the Government and its agencies to also introduce a prohibition of the predominance of any sex in the composition of the government and its agencies. Also, Section 14 (4) introduces the equitable representation of both sexes in the composition of government at a state, Local Government Councils, or any of its agencies. Other sections for reference include sections 147(3), 171(5), 192(2), 208 (4)”. The Minister noted.

Dame Pauline further added that most of the International and Regional Human Rights instruments specifically enacted for the promotion and protection of women’s rights which include the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa are yet to be domesticated in Nigeria.

The Minister also followed up the strategic media engagement with an advocacy visit to the Deputy Senate President, Distinguished Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

She however called on the 9th National Assembly headed by the Senate President, Dr. Ahmed Lawal, and the Rt Honorable Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, to act now in support of the course.

Dame Pauline also appealed to First Ladies in the States and the Honourable Commissioners of Women Affairs to work with CSOs to mobilize all women groups to participate at the Public Hearing in the 12 Centres; including making presentations, lobbying and advocating for inclusion of women’s position.

CAN COMMISERATES WITH PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI, NIGERIAN MILITARY AND THE FAMILIES OF THOSE WHO DIED IN THE MOST RECENT MILITARY PLANE CRASH

0

CAN Press Statement

The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) commiserates with President Muhammadu Buhari, (GCFR), the military high command, the security chiefs, and the immediate and extended families of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru and other officers who were killed while on board of the ill-fated military King Air 350 aircraft that crashed on Friday, May 21, 2021 near Kaduna Airport.

While our hearts are filled with sorrow for the supreme price they paid, we acknowledge with sense of gratitude to them, their selfless services to all of us in the nation. They laid down their lives in order to keep our nation safe and secure from the aggression of terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements in our nation. We pray for Your Excellency and all the families affected by their painful exit, fortitude and comfort of the Holy Spirit to bear the loss. We pray that this type of national tragedy will never occur again.

According to reports, Nigeria had four King Air 350 named NAF 201, NAF 202, NAF 203 and NAF 204. Sometimes in February this year, NAF 201 crashed in Abuja and killed all the eight Air Force crew men on board. We also reliably learnt that this was the third military air disaster in the space of three months.
If these reports are true, then it is high time thorough investigations are carried out with a view to ascertaining the immediate and remote causes of these recurrent disasters and address the causes decisively and squarely. We cannot continue to lose our finest military and security officers to air disasters without treating the situation as a national emergency.
CAN is genuinely concerned and suggests that while the nation still awaits the report of the cause or causes of this latest crash, adequate measures should be taken so as to avert this kind of tragedy both in our military and civil aviation in the future. We must ascertain that all military aircrafts are fit to fly and that the training of the flight officers is excellent. We further plead that adequate care should be taken of the dependants of the deceased so that they might be proud eternally of the nation the deceased served.
We once again call on the international community to come to the aid of our country to end the menace of insecurity occasioned by criminals manifesting as kidnappers, bandits and terrorists before they take over the country or turn it into a battle ground.

We call on all Nigerians to join us in CAN on May 28-30 to pray to God in the attitude of mourning and soberness for the unprecedented shedding of innocent blood in our nation and to pray to God for his quick intervention in our situation so that normalcy might return. We pray that evil will not overcome us in Nigeria and that Nigeria shall overcome all her challenges in Jesus’ name.
Thank You.

Daramola Bade Joseph, Esq.

CHRISTIAN PILGRIMAGE TO HOLY SITES IN JORDAN

0

Christian Pilgrimage is essentially meant for prayers to be offered at the Holy Sites, which is why it is a spiritual journey that evokes our consciousness as humans who yearn to understand the existential nature of our spiritual being.
So man continuously seek the face of God as long as he lives because the Holy Bible makes us to understand that we are all pilgrims on earth, and we must return to our creator once we are done with the assignment the Lord has called us for.
Christians are desirous to have this spiritual experience of a life time in the Biblical Holy Sites where the Prophets and our lord Jesus Christ walked and lived all through their ministry on earth. Indeed, Christians are eager to follow the footsteps of our Fathers in faith and walk through their path.
Jordan as a pilgrimage destination is replete with many major Biblical sites without which the Bible will be incomplete as many Prophets in the Old Testament began their ministry journey from there before crossing over to Israel.
The avalanche of Biblical Holy Sites in Jordan is awesome; it is better experienced than imagined.
The kingdom of Jordan by all intents and purposes is undoubtedly a home to some of the most influential Biblical leaders of the past: Abraham, Job, Moses Ruth, Elijah, John the Baptist, Jesus Christ and Paul to mention but a few.
Jordan remains the Holy Land visited by all of these great individuals, it breathes with the histories recorded in the Holy Bible.
Through the words of the Prophets Abraham, Job and Moses in the Bible’s Old Testament. It is imperative to affirm that the original Baptismal site where Christ was baptized is in River Jordan.
It was in Jordan where Prophet Moses journeyed with the Israelites where John the Baptist heralded in the New Testament of the Christian Faith and where Jesus Christ started his ministry with his baptism.
Without mincing words, Jordan is richly blessed with immense Biblical history. This is where Jacob wrestled with the Angel of God, where Lot’s wife was turned into a pillar of salt, where Job was tested and rewarded for his faith and where Elijah ascended to heaven.
Jordan is also the land through which Moses led the Israelites on their flight from Egypt, the site of Jesus’ baptism, the gathering grounds of the first disciples and where the Holy Trinity – The Father, Son and Holy Spirit manifested himself.
Jordan as a pilgrimage destination is the land of miracles, where God appeared to the prophets in form of whirlwinds; a cloud of light, an angel or a voice that commanded them to do His will. With a Jordan pilgrimage, pilgrims will have the opportunity to visit Mount Nebo where Moses view the promise land as well as the Dead Sea.
It is therefore instructive to assert that the Establishment Act of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission empowers it to organise, coordinate and supervise the movement of Christians from Nigeria to perform Holy Pilgrimage to the Holy Sites in the world. It is in pursuit of the provision of the Act that the Commission introduced more pilgrimage destinations over time such as Rome and Greece to accommodate St. Paul’s second missionary journey in Greece and also make provision for the catholic faithfuls to visit St. Peters Basilica in Vatican City as well as having Papal audience.
NCPC has continued to explore more Holy Sites over the years to accommodate the yearnings and aspirations of Christians who want to reconnect to their faith. For example, the Commission has licensed and registered the Knights of St. Mulumba of the Catholic Church to enable them perform pilgrimage at the shrine of Mulumba in Uganda in reverence to the martyrs of Uganda.
The Commission will as part of its mandate continue to explore various Holy sites in accordance with its enabling Act.
With the advent of the COVID 19 global pandemic in 2019, pilgrimage generally has been adversely affected. For instance, in 2019 about 4.5 million pilgrims visited Israel prior to the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic. Unfortunately, the following year-2020, Israel recorded zero pilgrims which has never happened since 1,600 years ago.
This situation has greatly affected the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims who have not been able to perform pilgrimage to Israel close to two years running.
NCPC with its proactive and dynamic leadership of Rev. Yakubu Pam decided to consult widely with the strategic stakeholders including state pilgrimage leaders and relevant government and non government bodies to take a holistic look at the situation on ground relying heavily on its enabling Act.
After due consultation with the relevant stakeholders, the Commission had approval from the Presidency to embark on State of Readiness visit to the kingdom of Jordan. This strategic visit commenced on 11th April, 2021 and lasted for one week. The delegation comprised state Chairmen and Secretaries of States Christian Pilgrims Welfare Boards, the Chairman of the NCPC Board, Rev. Yomi Kasali, and the Executive Secretary of NCPC, Rev. Yakubu Pam as well as few other board members of the Commission.
The visit was a double edged mission as the Commission’s officials and relevant officials from the Aviation Ministry inspected the pilgrims Aircraft which would be used to airlift intending pilgrims to Jordan for the 2020 pilgrimage Exercise.
The seven day State of Readiness visit to the kingdom of Jordan by NCPC and Christian stakeholders was revealing and amazing so much so that at the end of the fact finding visit, virtually all the stakeholders, particularly the states pilgrimage leaders endorsed and approved the participation of their states in the Jordan pilgrimage.
The life we live is a very dynamic world; the only constant thing is change. The COVID 19 pandemic has introduced a new normal in the world affairs and our Christian pilgrimage is not an exception.
It is instructive to affirm that the decision to embark on Holy pilgrimage to Jordan is a collective decision of strategic Christian Stakeholders after assessing the viability and spiritual relevance of the Holy Sites in Jordan.
To this effect, the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission has commenced vigorous screening of intending Pilgrims to Jordan across the States which is still ongoing. The Commission has successfully screened intending pilgrims of Plateau State, Ekiti, Osun, Enugu, Nasarawa, Lagos and FCT amongst others.
It is equally germane to state that during the visit of the NCPC and its Stakeholders to Jordan on 11th April, this year, Nigerian private pilgrims on pilgrimage were on ground to perform their Holy Pilgrimage.
In the same vein, the Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele has sponsored about 41 members of his Church to Jordan for the purpose of pilgrimage. The members it was learnt departed Nigeria on 17th May, 2021 for Jordan. This is to say that the Nigerian Pilgrims are already at home with the pilgrimage opportunities available in Jordan.
Jordan as a new pilgrimage destination by the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission is a welcome development and should be embraced by all stakeholders. We can appreciate the genuine concern of our revered Christian leaders, the Commission and its Stakeholders are strategizing to have a hitch pilgrimage exercise to Jordan by the end of the month, but at the end of the day every Christian pilgrim will have reason to appreciate the Commission for embarking on such a soul inspiring journey of a life time.
The Pilgrimage to Israel is however not cut off completely, but will under conducive circumstances continue with Jordan as addition.
As NCPC prepares to flag off the 2020 pilgrimage exercise by the end of May, all hands must be on deck to make the Commission’s debut pilgrimage outing to Jordan a huge success.

CAN Congratulates Okonjo-Iweala Over WTO Appointment

0

…A Giant Stride Indeed

The Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN) rejoices and congratulates Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her appointment as the Director General of World Trade Organization (WTO).

Your appointment is a giant stride for all women all over the world, being the first time a woman is so appointed. It is much more a giant stride and rare achievement for African women in particular.

Your appointment is a pride to the black race all over the world and a greater pride to Nigeria, your home country which you had served so well before with utmost integrity. Your appointment has demonstrated that with God all things are possible.

The initial snare to your appointment was broken by Him who rules in the affairs of men. Power and promotion belong to God. Yours is a lesson for us all to be our best and that at the fullness of time, no opposition can stand our elevation.

God has blessed our country with great human resources any country can be proud of and we are happy that some of them are now playing global roles to the glory of God.

Our dear Sister, we urge you to lead the WTO with impeccability like Daniel did (Daniel 6) in Babylon so that the footprint of WTO might be positively felt in all countries of the world as it was never felt before. With your antecedents, professionalism, commitment, focus, determination and dedication to duty, with God on your side, we have no doubt that you will succeed in the name of Jesus Christ.  Amen.

On behalf of CAN,  once again, I say a very big  CONGRATULATION.

0

Press Release

The John Hopkins Program for International Education in Obstetrics and Gyncachology (jhpiego) have been commended for working seamlessly to improve the lives of Women and Children in Nigeria.

The commendation was made by the Minister of women affairs Dame Pauline Tallen when the Country Director of jhpiego; Dr. Ade Oniyire paid her a working visit in her office in Abuja on Tuesday, 2nd February, 2021.

Dame Pauline Tallen said that the focus of jhpiego, in the third world, boarders, more or less on issues that challenge women and children’s well-being in Nigeria and the developing world.

The Minister said that the issues of women mainstreaming are cross-cutting and should dominate discussion at the International forum during and after Covid-19 pandemic.

Women are politically, economically and educationally backward. Women are confronted with health challenges, deprivation and hunger. There is therefore the need for development partners to come up with programs to bail women out of these predicaments.

Some of the issues that require international intervention include; education, health, agriculture, portable water, security, environment and energy, she said.

The Minister said that her Ministry has placed the issue of girl-child education on the front burner and called for international support so that girl-children in Nigeria and other third world countries remain in school up to, at least, Secondary School level.

Some other areas for collaborations with donor partners that she highlighted are; in the area of political, emancipation and socio-economic participation of women in nation building.

She said that there is the need to increase the velocity of advocacy so that state governments would see the need to domesticate the Child Rights Act, the VAD and other law instruments in favour of women.

There is also the need to collaborate with the Ministry of Health to eliminate all forms of harmful practices including Female Genital Mutilation and other forms of Gender Base Violence.

The Minister said that, the Ministry is tackling the issues of gender mainstreaming from all angles so as to create a Nigerian Society that is safe for all its citizens.

Earlier, the Country Director, John Hopkins Program for International Education in Obstetrics and Gynecachology (Jhpiego), Dr. Ade Oniyire said that the visit will afford him the opportunity to learn, from source, the most critical areas for collaboration between his organization and the Ministry of Women Affairs.

Dr. Ade Oniyire said that jhpiego has been around the country and other parts of Africa from the year 2007.

He said that his organization has executed programs in some parts of Nigeria including Borno, Taraba and Sokoto States. Adding that his organization is at a stage of executing a 5 million US Dollars project in Bauchi and some other states of the Federation.

He said that the Bauchi program has more to do with family issues such as health, child marriage, VVF and the likes. Adding that the project is funded by USAID with the assistance of other UN donor agencies.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ambassador Anthonia Ekpa stressed the need for Jhpiego to work with the Ministry’s program Directors so that they would be in good positions and are well equiped with knowledge on jhpiego programs to advise the Minister properly.
