The Executive Chairman of Kogi State Mineral Resources Development Agency, Hajiya Hassiat Ozavize Suleiman has called for increased participation and inclusion of women in elective positions across the country.

In remarks made to press at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Stakeholders Summit, held today in Abuja, Hajiya Suleiman opines that increased gender parity in party politics and Governance in general will create a level playing field for active participation in politics, thereby moving the party forward and breaking barriers.

Speaking further, the Chairman advocates for state and federal office holders to borrow a leaf from Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, stating that the gender-sensitive administration boasts an unprecedented number of women in elective and appointed positions across the state. This, she said, has gone a long way towards consolidating the APC’s ethos of inclusivity and openness. She also enjoined youth participation in politics and Governance.

The Summit with theme, “Rebuilding the APC of our dreams” which held today at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre, saw Salihu Lukman, director-general of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) delivering the Keynote address. The Summit also included a panel discussion moderated by Gbenga Titiloye. There, issues bordering on challenges and prospects for a greater Nigeria through the vehicle of the APC, as well as youth engagement, were robustly discussed.

School meals in Nigeria fight child hunger, boost local economies and increase attendance levels

FMHADMSD-WFP JOINT NEWS RELEASE

11 January 2022

ย As schools reopen in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development (FMHADMSD) with technical support from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP)announces, it will be taking to the next level, the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP), launched by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2016. This decision results from aย jointย assessment conducted in the first quarter of 2021 to identify ways of improving, scaling-up and sustaining the NHGSFP.

Home Grown School Feeding initiatives promote nutrition education and better eating habits and encourage the diversification of production with a special emphasis on local crops. WFP is backing the next stage with a significant transfer of ICT equipment. This includes tablets with access to the PLUS Schools Menus โ€“ a free tool to help state Nutrition Officers design nutritious menus for schools.

The hardware will not only support the Ministryโ€™s efforts to digitalize its monitoring and evaluation system, but also enable the national roll out of the PLUS School Menu Tool developed by WFP to standardize cost-effective menu development.

By 2021, this breakthrough initiative serves school meals to over 9 million students in 53,000 public primary schools, making it one of the largest school feeding programmes in Africa. It has also led to a significant increase in school enrollment across the country.ย Moreover, the programme has provided a much-needed boost to local economies by buying the products of small holder farmers and providing jobs to more than 107,000 cooks from low-income families.

Schools provide local farmers with a predictable outlet for their products, leading to a stable income, more investments and higher productivity. The children enjoy healthy, diversified food; this makes it more likely that they will stay in school, perform better, and improve their adult job prospects.

In line with one of the key pillars for sustaining the NHGSFP, several partnerships have been realised across various relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Government, which have truly strengthened the collaboration and cooperation for a more effective service delivery.  Key partners include the National Youth Service Corp, Ministries of Agriculture, of Education, Information, Trade and Industry, Water Resources amongst others.

Quotes

Honorable Minister Sadiya Farouq, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development โ€œThe NHGSFP remains an important intervention of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Through it hunger, malnutrition, poverty, education can all be addressed. It is an investment that is fully funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria because of its sheer potential as a development driver. We at the FMHADMSD are here to ensure that this programme is strengthened and sustained so that it can continue to support the needs of the children, families, women and communities it targets. The technical support from the World Food Programme is therefore timely, relevant and well appreciated.

Ronald Sibanda, WFP Country Director a.i.

โ€œOne of the best ways of fighting hunger and preventing malnutrition among children is to provide them with a healthy school meal. Nigeria is a good example of where the Government has taken the lead from day one and invested resources and funding into the design and implementation of its National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme. This is a great initiative and WFP is very pleased to provide technical support for the Government of Nigeria.โ€

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development continues to successfully implement the Nigerian Governmentโ€™s Social Investment Programme where over thirty million Nigerians have benefited and continue to benefit directly and indirectly from different clusters of the programme making it the largest social protection programme ever carried out in Nigeria and one of the biggest in Africa. Many who were hitherto poor have been lifted out of poverty through the Conditional Cash Transfers they now own small businesses thus improving their quality of life significantly. Children in primary 1-3 in government schools are feed one nutritious meal daily, this has improved school enrolment and helps in reducing the number of out of school children. The program continues to support the work of cooks-caterers of which 99% are women, thus driving social and financial inclusion.

The United Nations World Food Programme is the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.  We are the worldโ€™s largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change.

Bayero Agabi hails 2021 achievements, predicts what ICT sector holds for 2022

0

Africa most celebrated ICT journalist and President of the Center for Cyber Awareness and Development (CECAD), Dr Bayero Agabi has hailed 2021 as the year the Information and Communications Technology industry witnessed many first for individuals and corporate organisations.

Speaking for himself, he said he personally experienced another first in 2021 with the successful induction into the fellowship cadre of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) last month at this yearโ€™s National Information Technology Merit Awards (NITMA)

Nigeria Computer Society had bestowed on Dr, Bayero a Honourary Fellowship, which is the highest for any professional attainment for his distinguished personality, dedication and exemplary service to IT growth and development in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, going by the policies and direction of the present government with regards to ICT development, Dr. Bayero has predicted the industry will in 2022 witness double of what it witnessed in 2021.
In his own words: โ€œConsidering what I see today with regards to IT development, Africa will soon have a loud voice in tech and innovation just like music and entertainment has done. Just watch, ICT growth in 2022 will double what we witnessed in 2021.โ€

The Nigerian information and communications technology (ICT) sector had contributed a significant 17.92% of Nigeria’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the second quarter of 2021. But Dr, Bayero believes the year 2022 will experience significant increase with regards to ICT contribution to the countryโ€™s Gross Domestic Product. He laced his argument on the fact that the licensing and auctioning of 3.5 Ghz spectrum for 5G deployment, where Nigeria is expected to receive $546m will hugely boost the economic fortune of the country.

Other areas Bayero believes will experience massive is Fintech, where young Nigerians are chopping out cutting-edge technology solutions that are addressing the financial needs of Nigerians, especially the unbanked and under banked.

Dr. Bayero Agabi is one of the very few in the ICT industry, who has in the last twenty years make sure the telecom industry become what it is today by various advocacy.
