The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs. Ifeoma Anagbogu has said that the meeting of the National Council on Women Affairs affords stakeholders an opportunity to design workable strategy to address the plight of Women and Children. The council is also an avenue for experience and expertise sharing on emerging issues affecting Women.

The Permanent Secretary said this in a welcome remark at the technical session of the 20th Council on Women Affairs which took place at the Ministry Headquarters, Abuja on Wednesday, 12th August, 2020.

The meeting which was conducted on the Zoom platform had representatives from most States of the Federation and the FCT who participated via teleconference.

The Permanent secretary said that the meeting was conducted on Zoom because of the Coronavirus lockdown.

She said that stakeholders should come-up with strategies to tackle the post Covid-19 concerns as they affect Women and children.

Going memory lane, the Permanent Secretary thanked the government and people of Ondo State for hosting the 19th National Council on Women Affairs in Akure.

She said that the governor of Akwa Ibom State had approved the hosting of the 20th national Council on Woman Affairs but this was not to be because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mrs. Ifeoma Anagbogu said that, the theme for the 20th Council; “Gender Base Violence: A Shadow in pandemic and a call to an end”, is significant at this time given the ravaging Covid-19 which has constituted a great threat to the Socio-economic development of Nigeria.

She pointed out that Women and Children are more adversely affected by the economy and social activities; turn down occasioned by the pandemic.

During the lockdown many girl children and women were rape. Some women lost their sources of livelihood and self-dignity, while others were completely displaced, she said.

Mrs. Anagbogu called on participants to come-up with workable programmes and solutions to solve the post pandemic era.

THE JUDICIARY PLAYS VERY IMPORTANT ROLE IN OUR DEMOCRATIC EXPERIENCE – NCPC BOSS

The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission Rev Yakubu Pam has said that the Judiciary plays very important role in our democratic experience.

He made this disclosure recently in Abuja while playing host to the members of the Plateau State Judiciary led by His Lordship, the Chief Judge of Plateau State, Justice Yakubu Dakwak. His words ‘ the Judiciary being the third arm of government which interprets the law of the land has a very important role to play in our democratic experience’. He further applauded him for the quick dispensation of justice in Plateau State under his leadership, because he was aware that justice delay is justice denied.     

The NCPC Boss commended the Chief Judge and his team for the genuine support they have been giving to the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, RT. Hon. Simon Lalong.  He assured the members of the Plateau State Judiciary that NCPC under his watch would witness a complete turn around and would not bring shame to the people of God. 

Earlier, the Chief Judge of Plateau State, Justice Yakubu Pam said they were in NCPC to congratulate the Executive Secretary on his well deserved appointment. His Lordship thanked God and Mr President for finding him worthy of the appointment. He intimated the NCPC Boss that his appointment did not come to them as a surprise.

According to him, ‘you are a highly experienced person, a man of peace and a round peg in a round hole’. He further explained that as a Clergy he was sure that Rev. Pam would be able to make a difference in NCPC. He urged Rev Pam to carry everyone along and be fair to all. His Lordship prayed that God would grant him the spirit of discernment to lead ncpc aright.

The Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) under the leadership of the Co-Chairmen, Rev. Dr. Samson Supo Ayokunle, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) congratulates President Muhammadu Buhari and the entire citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for being among the countries that have ratified the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). NIREC thanks the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that has followed up to make this ratification of the UN Treaty possible. As people all over the world are marking the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, “Nigeria, Ireland and Niue” have chosen to remember the victims and honour the hibakusha, the survivors, in the most meaningful way possible: by taking action to ban and eliminate these weapons of mass destruction for good.

While congratulating Nigerians and the Federal Government of Nigeria for this bold step at the International level, NIREC once again call on Government at all levels to sign into law the prohibition of proliferation of arms and ammunition in Nigeria. Given that charity begins at home, the leadership of the Federal Republic of Nigeria must set a day aside to remember all the victims that have been killed by terrorists, bandits and all forms of criminals in Nigeria. NIREC calls for compensation for the displaced victims of violence and security for them to return to their native land. Government must provide adequate security for the Nigerian citizens to enjoy peaceful coexistence irrespective of tribe, political affiliation and religion.

NIREC is affiliated to the African Council of Religious Leaders and Religions for Peace (ACRL-RfP). The headquarters of ACRL is Nairobi-Kenya while the headquarters of RfP is New York – USA. It is gratifying to know that Nigeria is the headquarters of the West Africa Inter-Religious Council (WA-IRC).Congratulations Nigeria for ratifying the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). May all Nations live in peace, love and unity!

FG Begins Reforms Of Nigeria’s International Investment Agreements

The Federal Government is to undertake series of reforms of Nigeria’s Bilateral International Treaties to attract responsible, inclusive, balanced and sustainable investments.

The move would involved the development of a new model BIT, modernise existing stock of old generation treaties and enable the government put in place a coherent legal framework at all levels.

The Director, Legal Department, Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, Patience Okala disclosed these on Thursday during a Webinar held by management team with journalists.

The management team was led by the Executive Secretary, NIPC, Yewande Sadiku.

She said the NIPC’s efforts to review as well as validate bilateral investment treaties entered by Nigeria with several other countries were to ensure Nigeria harvest maximum investment benefits from such bilateral trade deals.

In carrying out the review, she said it would be done in a manner that complies with global standards on labour, human rights, environment, corporate social responsibilities.

She said the review would also focus on inclusive approach that would mobilise investments and create jobs while balancing investors’ rights with obligations.

Okala explained that the move would also promote sustainable development objectives that aligns with agenda 2030 of the United Nations.

She noted that the bilateral agreement treaties that would be reviewed would cover those signed between 1990 and 2001 fiscal periods.

It is instructive that some of these agreements did come into force until 2010 which is about ten years later.

She said the review of some of these agreements would help the government avoid litigation such as the one involving P&ID where the company had dragged Nigeria to Court for alleged breach of contract.

A panel of three arbitrators had voted 2-1 to award the company the full sum of its claim of $6.6bn, including interest totaling $9.6bn.

The country in 2010 under former President Goodluck Jonathan, had signed the gas processing project, but in 2012, the company began an arbitration process, alleging breach of contract.

Okala said the bilateral agreement review being done by NIPC would help to introduce mediation and dispute mechanisms.

She also said it would provide safeguards to Investor-State Dispute Settlement provisions.

Yewande in her remarks at the meeting said that the Coronavirus pandemic has opened an opportunity for investors in the country.

She said while the impact has made it imperative for very aggressive investment promotion by Nigeria as competition for capital has increase across the world.

She said the best way to proactively position Nigeria is to sell the country on a sector by sector basis based on specific investments that cut across various areas.

Sadiku said the NIPC is currently having a number of engagements with its partners to boost the level of investment inflow into the country.

The NIPC boss said, “We are having partnership with states and we are also improving the efforts at promoting investments at the state level.”

She explained that with prediction from the International Monetary Fund about the country doing into it’s worst recession in 40 years, it had become compelling to become more creative in attracting investments.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission, Rev Yakubu Pam sued for peace in the troubled communities of the Southern Kaduna.

In a condolence visit to the Executive Governor of Kaduna state, Nasiru El Rufai, on 6th August, 2020, he affirmed, ” I am deeply touched with the recent turn of events in Southern Kaduna where innocent lives were perished due to crisis that rocked the area”. The NCPC helmsman who is also the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN Northern Nigeria commended the critical stakeholders in the state, particularly, His Excellency, Governor Nasiru El Rufai for the proactive steps taken so far to protect and secure lives of innocent persons in the rural communities of Kaduna state.

In the words of Rev. Pam, “I am here on my capacity as a religious leader in Northern Nigeria and your humble brother who desire enduring peace and unity in the country and in Kaduna state”. He called on critical stakeholders in search of lasting peace in the country to harmonise ideas and brainstorm over the issues with the aim of finding lasting solution to the situation. Rev Pam assured the Kaduna state Governor that he would do everything possible to partner with eminent religious bodies such as Christian Association of Nigeria CAN, Jama’ atu Nasiru Islam JNI, Mayeti A’llah Cattle Breeders Association, community leaders and indigenous people in Southern Kaduna in a “frank and open dialogue to help bring out genuine suggestions towards resolving the crisis”. Rev. Pam cautioned that the situation in southern Kaduna should not be handled with sentiments and there was no need to apportion blames rather all hands must be on deck to secure the lives of innocent Nigerians, particularly the people of Southern Kaduna. He called on all the interventionist agencies to urgently reach out to the affected communities across the local governments that were recently displaced so as to address their plights. The Cleric admonished the indigenous people of Southern Kaduna to remain calm and report to the security agencies any suspicious activities or persons working to unleash terror or undermining the peace and security of the people.

In his remarks, Governor Nasiru El Rufai commended the reconciliatory role Rev Pam and the Northern CAN are playing in addressing the ugly situation in the southern Kaduna. He assured that he would continue to do everything within the ambit of the law to secure the lives and property of the people of Kaduna state, particularly the Southern Kaduna. He promised to constantly engage critical stakeholders in the state with a view to putting an end to the innocent killings of the people of Southern Kaduna, while assuring that perpetrators of this heinous crime would be brought to justice.

NIREC CALLS FOR EFFECTIVE SECURITY FOR NIGERIAN CITIZENS

The Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) under the leadership of the Co-Chairmen, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto; President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and Rev. Dr. Samson Olasupo Adeniyi Ayokunle, President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention; President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is constrained to call on the government to provide security for the Nigerian citizens. NIREC has always condemned the terrorists’ attacks on innocent citizens in the North Eastern part of Nigeria and the various criminal activities in the various parts of the country.

NIREC is worried that the threats and killings keep spreading. We condemn the carnage on human life especially the recent killings of 76 people in Sabon Birni Local Government of Sokoto State; RuwanTofa Dansadua district in Zamfara State; ZagonKataf Local Government Area in Kaduna State; Bethel Baptist Church Aguda-Dauruwan Kogi State and the attack on the convoy of the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum at Baga. We condemn absolutely, the political thuggery that threatens human life and peaceful coexistence.

During his traditional Sallah homage to the Governor of Borno State, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai ElKanemi cried out: “My people in Borno are no longer safe.” Consequently, Maiduguri, in particular should not be allowed to be run over by the insurgents who have been throwing mortals there, killing people. These show how serious the State of insecurity is in the nation. These situations and the likes are of grave concern to NIREC. The unabated carnages leave the citizens in a state of complete despair as economic activities are almost paralyzed.

NIREC is therefore constrained once again to call on the Government at all levels to take security as a top priority for every Nigerian. The Government at all levels must double up their efforts of securing the lives and property of the citizens. The security Agents must fish out the criminals to face justice. The security Agents must mop up the arms and ammunitions in the hands of criminals. The government must ensure a complete stop to the proliferation of all forms of weapons that criminals use to destroy life and property.

COVID-19 Crises: FCTA Health Care Workers Have Been Selfless

The healthcare sector has been one of the worst hit with the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. In Abuja the Federal Capital Territory Administration responded to the situation with commitment. In this exclusive interview with Social Plus Africa the Acting Director Nursing Services Mrs Leo Grace Musa speaks on how the authorities rose to the demand.

How did the FCTA manage to handle and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic

The activities we carried out here in FCT were so numerous. When the issue of COVID-19 came up everybody was panicking. We thought it was something that has come to devour the whole of humanity, particularly here in FCT but to the glory of God, the Honorable Minister of the FCT and the support of the Acting Secretary they were so proactive in response to the challenge.  As a result, the FCT was able gain control of COVID-19.

 In what ways was the management able to motivate resources and staff

The Management really tried it’s best to see that things were in order. Medical supplies were been made available to various hospital.

Nurses were trained in many ways both volunteers and even the serving nurses and health workers.

Everyone put in his/her own best to see that COVID-19 doesn’t devour us especially here in the FCT.

FCT nurses and volunteers were really impressive, we are proud of them. They were the generals. We considered the pandemic a war and the nurses and other medical personnel were the soldiers as the front line workers who went to the field after their training and sensitization and they are all confronted the fight against the pandemic at various isolation centres.

 Do you really think these frontline workers responded based on govt motivation or professionalism

To be honest no body will put his or her life on the line no matter what you call motivation. These people know their calling is between life and death. Otherwise how much do you think anyone will get to agree to go to the battle front. They knew their services required them to be posted to the isolation centres in the FCT. We have the one in Idu, Karmo, Asokoro, University Teaching Hospital, even the National Hospital. It was more of sacrifice to volunteer to face this pandemic on their part.  We salute their efforts, we salute their understanding

we want to encourage them to continue put in their best. This is service to humanity, this is service that the whole world is looking at and as a nurses we know they are the heartbeat of healthcare because without the nurses, I don’t think the healthcare system can be what it is now. No amount of monetary reward is worth their service to humanity.

We are encouraging them all the same and they ain’t relenting.

 Are there life insurance for these frontline care givers.

We try to do our best but again make sure they protect themselves very well before attending to patient because it will not be a joy on our part to loss any of them. We keep on praying for them, we keep on encouraging them and we thank them for this sacrifice of love that they are showing to humanity.

CAN PRESIDENT COMMENDS PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF REV. PAM AS NCPC BOSS

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN Rev. Dr. Supo Ayokunle has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing one of their own, Rev. Yakubu Pam as the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission.

He made this commendation recently in Abuja at the prayer and dedication of NCPC. Rev.

Ayokunle stated that God had used the appointment of Rev Yakubu Pam to remove shame from CAN. He explained that CAN had existed for 44 years and this is the first time the body is being honoured with such an appointment and this explains why the entire CAN leadership gathered in NCPC to pray and dedicate the office.

He affirmed that they were given back to God what He had given to them. He admonished that the burden of NCPC is not his, because God is a burden bearer and so He would bear the burden of the office for him. Speaking, the NCPC boss Rev. Yakubu Pam thanked the leadership of CAN for their solidarity and concern for him. He affirmed that CAN is a family and as such should be able to resolve whatever dispute they might have when they come together as one, especially under a good father like Rev. Ayokunle. He promised he would not let the church down, but would leave a legacy that would send a signal to the Government that CAN has worthy members who would superintendent effectively at any leadership level.

REV PAM CALLS FOR THE UP GRADE OF THE YAKUBU GOWON AIRPORT, JOS

The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission Rev Yakubu Pam, has called for the up grade of the Yakubu Gowon Airport Jos to enable it airlift Plateau pilgrims and other pilgrims from neighbouring States direct from Jos to Israel. 

He disclosed this recently while playing host to the Executive Secretary, Plateau State Christian pilgrims welfare Board, Rev. Fr. George Gorap who paid him a congratulatory visit with his management team in his office in Abuja.

He posited that a situation where by Plateau pilgrims would travel to Abuja to fly to Israel during pilgrimage is not convenient and palatable. He explained that with the number of Pilgrims being sponsored by the government of Plateau State, there is need to fix and upgrade the Airport so that Plateau Pilgrims would be airlifted from Jos. He called on the Governor of Plateau State, RT. Hon. Simon Lalong to who is committed to the upgrading of the airport to use his good offices to make it possible so that pilgrims would be airlifted from Jos in the next pilgrimage exercise. He commended Rev. Fr Gorap for his humility and hardwork. He explained that while serving at the Board in Plateau State, he was able to add value to the system. To this end he stated ” it is my prayer that the example we left behind at the Board will be sustained.” He was sanguine that the next chairman of the Board should be able to continue from where he stopped.

Earlier, Rev. Fr Gorap said they were in NCPC to felicitate with Rev Pam on his well deserved appointment. He affirmed that Plateau State is very appreciative of Mr President for finding him worthy of the appointment. He described his appointment “as putting a square peg in a square hole” According to him, “I know who you are because of the changes you brought to  bear at the  Board.”He further reiterated that on the table of Christian pilgrimage in Nigeria that Plateau State has a space as the leading state with the highest number of sponsored pilgrims in recent time. He said this feat was made possible under the leadership of Rev. Pam as Chairman of the Board. He stressed that the fact that Plateau State is leading, does not presupposes that the state has more resources than other states but according to him, “it is simply because the state has understood what pilgrimage is all about”
